When visiting San Antonio not too long ago we were afforded a trip to the Mercado by a friend of the family; an intriguing shopping experience that’s as close to shopping south of the border as a gringo can get without actually crossing the border. The culinary jewel of this shopping experience was a visit to the famous Mi Tierra Cafe & Bakery…a eatery that has hosted presidents, celebrities and everyday folk for decades.
The ambiance here is decadent, Mexican decadence if that makes sense…everything is done to excess from the exquisitely shiny spanish tiles adorning the floors to the christmas lights and mexican decorations and revelry that abound throughout, year round. On the walls as might be expected you will find pictures of famous denizens that have graced the tables of the eatery; on this visit we sat with former President Bill Clinton overlooking our late lunch.
The food is authentic and reasonably priced given the tourist centric locale. The bakery is exemplary and offers all manner of baked culinary indulgences, fit to sate even the sweetest of sweet teeth amongst your dining party. On this day I tried the Chimichanga which was exemplary and finished it off with some terrific tres-leches for dessert. Well recommended for a visit away from the Alamo or the River Walk,
