Iconic Formula 1 Rivals Battle In Ron Howard’s Rush

New US Trailer for Ron Howard’s Formula 1 Racing Movie Rush Starring Chris Hemsworth, Olivia Wilde and Daniel Bruhl

Last week we saw the first international trailer for Ron Howard’s upcoming formula one racing biopic,RUSH, and now we have a finely chopped domestic trailer to accompany it. Whereas the international trailer had a more “action-y” feel to it, this new one capitalizes on the dramatic elements mixed with some rubber-burning tension.

There hasn’t been that many pure racing movies in recent memory. There have been some foreign films such as MICHAEL VAILLANT and INITIAL D but for a country that loves their cars America has ignored racing films lately. THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS franchise became more about the action and films such as SPEED RACER and HERBIE: FULLY LOADED don’t really count in my opinion. And the less said about DRIVEN the better.

There’s a new trailer for Ron Howard’s Formula One film RUSH and it looks like it will have exciting racing scenes as well as some insight as to why some men have a need for speed. The film is based around the 1976 Formula One season and specifically the rivalry between drivers James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl).

To me some of Ron Howard’s best films have been the ones based on true stories like APOLLO 13 and A BEAUTIFUL MIND. He does a fantastic job of making someone or something extraordinary relatable (how many of you are astronauts or flawed mathematical geniuses?) and RUSH looks like it could be another solid entry from the director. I’m not a racing fan (or even a huge a fan of films based on racing) but there were plenty of interesting events during the Formula One season of 1976 and with some intense racing (and of course some “quiet” moments), RUSH could be a movie worth checking out.

Here’s the synopsis:

A biography of Formula 1 champion driver Niki Lauda and the 1976 crash that almost claimed his life. Mere weeks after the accident, he got behind the wheel to challenge his rival, James Hunt.

We’re actually really excited for this. We haven’t had a good racing movie in a long time and in Howard’s more than capable hands this is sure to be a top tier entry in the genre. It’s nice to see Hemsworth outside of his Asgardian cape and Bruhl is an impressive actor to boot. Olivia Wilde is…just smoking hot, so there’s that. Visually, this looks like Howard went out of his way to capture some really sweet images and having another Hans Zimmer race car score (he also did Tony Scott’s DAYS OF THUNDER) is icing on the cake.

Below are some new stills from the film, as well as a track from Zimmer’s score for the pic. Also starring  the beautiful Olivia Wilde and Natalie Dormer, RUSH zooms into theaters on September 20th, 2013.
