Upstart Flytecam Looks To Offer An Attractively Streamlined GoPro Alternative

Whether you need another option or not, Flytecam is a 1080p POV video camera that’s looking to compete. It has specs that land it between GoPro’s lowest and middle tier offerings, but it’s supposed to be cheaper and doesn’t require waterproof or shock resistant cases.

flytecam was born out of frustration in an underwhelming industry…and the crew at flytecam have worked really hard to deliver a product that expresses their energy and passion, and attention to balancing functionality and usability with a unique aesthetic.

Flytecam has a rubberized body, is waterproof down to 3 meters, has an 120º lens and shoots 60fps for slow motion in 720p. It claims a three hour battery life and was developed alongside a “flytemount” that uses neodymium magnets and rubber teeth to secure the camera for mounting (see below).

Pre-order is starting soon and pricing alone will decide whether this is a legitimate competitor (the base model GoPro is currently $200). But Flytecam’s creators claim that they started the project “because we couldn’t find a product that we really wanted, (and most certainly couldn’t afford).” Okay, well then it better be cheap.

We think this thing is super awesome. It uses neodymium magnet tech to snap the flytecam to the head, with rubberised teeth to lock it in place.A few of the reasons why we think it’s best mount out there:

  • It’s snap-in, snap-out. You can snap it off at any time, turn the cam on and off, or swap it between friends. Super simple
  • It removes vibration. The constant pull of the magnet combined with rubberised coating means that there are none of the usual vibrations created between the mount and the cam
  • It’s small and low-profile (no over-engineered clunky plastic). When the flytecam’s not attached, you barely know it’s there
  • It’s secure, the strong neodymium magnet holds the flytecam in place, nice and tight. BUT… if it does get hit by something super hard, it’ll simply snap off (only when it’s not locked down)
  • Most importantly it’s SAFER. We know you’re pretty much a pro at whatever it is you do, but In the unlikely event of an epic bail, the cam snaps off – meaning no harm will be caused to you and your beautiful head / neck
  • Finally, in the case of doing something more extreme the cam can be fully locked down to the mount.
