Today, you can order more than 30 different BMW models with an M badge on them. Back in 1998, it was a completely different story, with the 850CSi long in the tooth along with the venerable but long-lived E36 M3. The Z3 roadster had found mass market success, so why not give it the M-treatment… Designed in Garching, but built in Spartanburg, the M Coupe came into being as a somewhat peculiar diamond in the rough that quickly found its footing with performance enthusiasts willing to look past its somewhat unconventional good looks.
